IC INFORMATION;
Characters Name: Count D
Age: unknown, appears mid-twenties but might be older because his species doesn’t age normally
Canon: Petshop of Horrors
Canon Point: after pushing Leon off the ship in the final chapter of the original series
Species: His family’s species is never given a specific name in canon but he’s definitely not human. They appear to be some sort of nature spirits or deities.
Gender: Male
Orientation: D's species reproduces asexually and when asked by a girl who was infatuated with him if he liked her, D confesses that he does not understand love between people. But he does act flirtatiously towards Leon at times. He also gets into a brief relationship with a man known as Wong (actually a totetsu in human disguise) although his motive there is really acquiring the animal for his shop. And he can be charming to female customers. I feel that he could go either way, leaning more towards men, but wouldn't care that much.
History:
Little is known of D’s past before the start of the series other than that he was raised by his grandfather and is estranged from his father. When the manga begins, it seems that he has already been running his pet shop in Los Angeles’ Chinatown for a couple of years.
The ten volumes of the original series cover about two years as the Count sells his exotic and magical pets that can take on a human appearance. The animals often come with a three clause contract that he warns the new owners against breaking or the shop cannot be held responsible for the consequences.
The shop eventually attracts the attention of Leon Orcot, a police detective who believes D is guilty of various crimes like drug trafficking and murder and is obsessed with putting him behind bars. They become unlikely friends and the Count eventually takes in Leon’s little brother Chris, who has lost the ability to speak and who can see the animals’ human forms.
The series is mainly episodic, introducing different pets and customers in each chapter, with Count D and Leon being the main thing that connects all of them together. Their adventures come to an end after Chris regains the ability to speak and leaves with his relatives and D leaves town soon after to avoid an FBI agent after his father. Agent Howell believes that D is the same D that he knew a couple of decades ago in college. Howell leaves in pursuit and when the two meet, he’s still not convinced D isn’t the one he met years ago. D suggests that they return to Los Angeles to meet his father if the agent isn’t convinced. The story behind D’s family is finally revealed in the confrontation that follows and D leaves on a flying ship which is actually the petshop after pushing Leon away, telling him that humans haven’t earned the right to board this ship yet.
Appearance: D has mismatched eyes with the left being purple and the right being yellow. His hair is a black bob that covers the yellow eye. (Although the artist is in the habit of giving him all sorts of hair colors on the manga splash pages, his hair is mentioned as black in the text and is black in the anime.) He has long nails, usually dresses in Chinese robes, and is often mistaken for a woman in canon due to his beauty.

Personality:
D’s motivations tend to be somewhat murky although we finally learn a bit more about them in the final chapters. D, his father, and his grandfather are actually clone-like duplicates descended from the lone survivor of a race that lived in Ancient China and understood the speech of animals. They were killed off by humans after a priestess of their race refused to marry the emperor’s son. The lone survivor, along with the animals vowed to take vengeance against humans and this was the story that D’s grandfather repeatedly told him as he grew up, teaching him that they could never forgive the humans. Knowing this, it’s somewhat easier to understand D’s disdain for humans and his love of animals and why he sells his dangerous pets and doesn’t think much of letting his animals attack those who threaten him.
Mysterious is probably the best word to describe Count D. He has a tendency to put on a smile for customers or towards other people he meets and uses this false expression to hide his true feelings. It’s frequently a facade to conceal his feelings towards humans, that he hates them, thinks them foolish and selfish and violent, and that animals are superior. However, his attitude towards them seems to soften as the series progresses with him notably becoming attached to the police detective Leon Orcot and Leon's little brother Chris. When he pushes Leon off the ship and leaves at the end of the manga, he appears to be smiling. However, he’s once again concealing his true feelings and there’s actually a single tear running down his face, hidden behind his hair.
He also tends to be calm and soft-spoken (when he’s not having one of his arguments with Leon over the latter’s crude manners, love of pornography, or other habits that irritate him and when he’s not getting excited over sweets which he loves). D is threatened a number of times throughout the series, held at gunpoint or knifepoint, yet he rarely shows fear or has much of a visible reaction to such threats.
D can be very charming when he wishes, always ready to serve a potential customer tea and sweets, and managing to gain many admirers and friends in high places. Everyone seems to like him, from mob bosses to Leon’s co-workers, and he’s welcome in places such as the mayor’s office and high society parties. And animals generally adore him, partly due to his supernatural abilities relating to them.
But he can also be creepy and vengeful and manipulative, giving Leon smiles that unnerve him and not hesitating to sic his dangerous pets on those who get on his bad side. In one chapter, when he fails to get assistance from the police right away regarding a series of pet killings, he smiles and tells them that he thinks some of his “special punishment” might be more appropriate for the killer. It sends a chill through everyone in the room and they quickly change their minds about not helping. And it’s not uncommon for humans who threaten him or break the contracts they made when buying pets from D to end up dead or come to harm from his animals.
D also has a nurturing side, usually shown in his love of animals and plants. He even takes in Chris when Leon’s job as a police detective makes it impractical for him to watch over his brother. Despite his initial disdain for humans, he does grow to care about Chris and they become like an odd little family. When the boy chooses to leave the shop and return to his relatives on the East Coast, D smiles but is truly sad about the departure.
Abilities:
D’s main abilities relate to animals: being able to see their human forms, understand their speech, and communicate with them. He can summon animals with his blood and they tend to be protective of him. Aside from his magical abilities relating to them, he’s also very knowledgeable about animals and their care.
He seems to be able to fly, once leaping up to a rooftop in an early chapter. And in one instance, he is shown to be able to detect the lasers in a security system with his yellow eye. His blood seems to be fatal to vampires if they drink it and plants will sprout from his spilled blood.
It’s also suggested that D is stronger than he looks and is actually decent at hand to hand fighting. There’s one scene where he’s being harassed by three punks and then the next page shows him dusting off his hands with the punks beaten and in a heap on the ground.

First Person:
[Judging by the sheepdog he's petting and the small flock of sheep around them, D is at the Holly Heights Farm where he looks rather out of place dressed in his usual silk brocade robes. But despite the animals sniffing at his clothes and leaving bits of hair all over the silk, he's smiling and genuinely enjoying their company. It's a few moments before he remembers he meant to address the network and turns his attention to the video feed.]
As you might be aware, yesterday was the beginning of the Year of the Sheep. [He pauses again to pet a sheep nudging at his knee and coo at how adorable it is.]
However, today is a special day for dogs. The Chinese consider the second day of the new year to be the birthday of all dogs.
[There's a small bow as he extends his invitation.]
Therefore, I would like to invite those of you who own dogs to bring your pets and join me in the Town Square for tea this afternoon. It is a day to give our canine friends some extra attention and I will have many special treats for them.
And for those who have been separated from their animals by this world, perhaps you could share your favorite memories of your dogs with me and remember them in that manner.
Third Person:
Choosing the pavilion in Town Square to provide shade against the unseasonably hot weather, D set down his picnic basket and began unpacking it. First, he brought out the china tea set followed by a canister of tea leaves and a large thermos of hot water. Next, came the sweets, a large selection of pastries from both the Honeybee Cafe and Moe Moe. And of course, plenty of gourmet dog biscuits. After all, today was the birthday of all dogs and they were the guests of honor.
But as he prepared for the party, his thoughts were less than kindly. If he had his magic and his pets right now, the Landlord would be a prime candidate for some of his special punishment. It was galling the way the man had trapped him in a human body, a violent and selfish species that he'd hated all his life for the way they treated the natural world. Even if he had come to see that they weren't all bad, that didn't mean he had any desire to be one!
But his family had been in the business of revenge as much as it had been in the business of selling pets. For now, he would put on that practiced charming smile, bide his time and befriend the animals here. It would be more difficult no longer being able to understand their speech and communicate with them but he understood the ways they usually behaved and would manage. Then, when the time was right, he would seek his vengeance on the Landlord.
He turned at the sound of a bark and bowed, greeting a dog and the human who accompanied it.
"Welcome. I am known as Count D. You must be here to join us for tea."
He crouched, offering his hand for the dog to sniff and smiled pleasantly up at the owner.
"You have a wonderful pet. May I ask her name?"
