[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Count D
Age: unknown, appears to be in his mid-20s
Gender: Male
Canon: Petshop of Horrors (manga)
Timeline: end of volume 10, after pushing Leon off the ship
Background:
Petshop of Horrors Wikipedia page (There isn’t really a good fandom specific wiki for it but if more is needed, I could write something up.)
Personality:
D’s motivations tend to be somewhat murky although we finally learn a bit more about them in the final chapters. D, his father, and his grandfather are actually clone-like duplicates descended from the lone survivor of a race that lived in Ancient China and understood the speech of animals. They were killed off by humans after a priestess of their race refused to marry the emperor’s son. The lone survivor, along with the animals vowed to take vengeance against humans and this was the story that D’s grandfather repeatedly told him as he grew up, teaching him that they could never forgive the humans. Knowing this, it’s somewhat easier to understand D’s disdain for humans and his love of animals and why he sells his dangerous pets and doesn’t think much of letting his animals attack those who threaten him.
Mysterious is probably the best word to describe Count D. He has a tendency to put on a smile for customers or towards other people he meets and uses this false expression to hide his true feelings. It’s frequently a façade to conceal his feelings towards humans, that he hates them, thinks them foolish and selfish and violent, and that animals are superior. However, his attitude towards them seems to soften as the series progresses with him notably becoming attached to the police detective Leon Orcot and his little brother Chris. When he pushes Leon off the ship and leaves at the end of the manga, he appears to be smiling. However, he’s once again concealing his true feelings and there’s actually a single tear running down his face, hidden behind his hair.
He also tends to be calm and soft-spoken (when he’s not having one of his arguments with Leon over the latter’s crude manners, love of pornography, or other habits that irritate him and when he’s not getting excited over sweets which he loves). D is threatened a number of times throughout the series, held at gunpoint or knifepoint, yet he rarely shows fear or has much of a visible reaction to such threats.
D can be very charming when he wishes, always ready to serve a potential customer tea and sweets, and managing to gain many admirers and friends in high places. Everyone seems to like him, from mob bosses to Leon’s co-workers, and he’s welcome in places such as the mayor’s office and high society parties. And animals generally adore him.
But he can also be creepy and vengeful, giving Leon smiles that unnerve him and not hesitating to sic his dangerous pets on those who get on his bad side. In one chapter, when he fails to get assistance from the police right away regarding a series of pet killings, he smiles and tells them that he thinks some of his “special punishment” might be more appropriate for the killer. It sends a chill through everyone in the room and they quickly change their minds about not helping. And it’s not uncommon for humans who threaten him or break the contracts they made when buying pets from D to end up dead or come to harm from his animals.
D also has a nurturing side, usually shown in his love of animals and plants. He even takes in Chris when Leon’s job as a police detective makes it impractical for him to watch over his brother. Despite his initial disdain for humans, he does grow to care about Chris and they become like an odd little family. When the boy chooses to leave the shop and return to his relatives on the East Coast, D smiles but is truly sad about the departure.
Why is your character a good fit for the setting of Soul Campaign, and what will they do once they are in the game?
Count D wouldn’t care too much about the war himself due to his dislike of humans. However, he would want to get back to his shop and would be appalled if he learned that the Madness spread by Witches and kishin eggs have also affected animals in the past, causing them to become crazed and hunted as well. That could potentially give him a reason to fight although he would likely find the idea of being wielded by someone else somewhat distasteful, especially if the Meister is human.
List the abilities your character will still have in Soul Campaign:
-D would retain his knowledge of animals and their care and would still be good with them although on the level of a human who works especially well with them rather than a supernatural one.
-He would also still be good with plants.
-He would also retain what physical fighting abilities he has. It’s suggested that he’s stronger than he looks and is actually decent at hand to hand fighting. There’s one scene where he’s being harassed by three punks and then the next page shows him dusting off his hands with the punks beaten and in a heap on the ground.
List the weaknesses your character will gain (or lose) in Soul Campaign:
-D would lose his magical abilities, no longer being able to understand the speech of animals, see their humanoid forms, or summon them with his blood. Also, plants wouldn’t sprout from his spilled blood.
-He’ll also lose access to his animals so if he encounters a threat, he won’t simply be able to sic his pets on them.

Soul Description:
Mysterious, Calm, Charming, Nurturing, Vengeful, Creepy
Due to his love of animals, plants, and nature, D’s soul is green. It has chin-length hair concealing the right eye, much like his hairstyle, and wears a mysterious and somewhat creepy smile.
(Weapon Form) / Ability:
D’s Weapon Form will be an elaborate incense burner, similar to the ones that he supplies to his customers but with a chain to keep the lid attached. The smoke that emerges from it will be made of soul wavelength and by concentrating and visualizing an animal, the Meister can manipulate the smoke to create animals to attack. The size and number of the animals that can be created at once plus how long they last will depend on resonance and the number of souls consumed.
At first, the Meister will only be able to create a couple of little animals such as cats or small dogs for physical attacks. As D absorbs more souls, larger animals and other types of attacks such as poison will be possible. 10 souls would allow poisonous creatures like spiders and small snakes as well as medium size animals such as large dogs and wolves. 25 souls would allow even larger animals such as bears and horses. And if the resonance is good enough, it might even be possible to create a mythical animal such as a dragon or kirin but this will require at least 40 souls. And larger animals will take more energy to create than small ones.

First-Person
[Here’s a face which might be familiar to those who have been here since last year although its owner wouldn’t recognize anyone. The man (or is it a woman?) is dressed in an elaborate Chinese robe and inclines his head towards the camera. The chin length black hair concealing a portion of his face shifts and those who look closely might catch a glimpse of a yellow eye, a mismatch for the other violet one.]
Allow me to introduce myself. I am known as Count D.
[D smiles although he’s far from pleased at the situation. He would much rather be back at the shop with all his pets, not drawn into some foolish human war. Fortunately, he’s had a lot of practice masking his true feelings.]
If I am to be stranded here, I would like to hear your recommendations of the best tea shops and bakeries in this city. I’d also love to hear about your favorite teas and sweets from these businesses.
Third-Person
“Humans have not earned the right to board this ship. Not yet.” Count D smiled as he placed his palms against Leon’s chest and pushed the detective off the floating ship. But like many smiles he had given to his customers, it wasn’t genuine, just a mask. The regret he felt manifested itself in a single tear from the golden eye hidden behind a curtain of black hair. He would miss the dear detective. The man had horrible manners and had tried to accuse him of every crime in the book but they had grown to be friends. Still, it was foolish for him to become attached to a human, impossible for him to stay. He would leave America and set up shop elsewhere. Europe, Germany perhaps…
But before he could decide on a definite course, he found himself suddenly surrounded by darkness and quiet. Gone were the sounds of the countless animals that inhabited the flying ship and the scent of the incense that perfumed the shop. It took a lot to surprise Count D but this accomplished that. “T-chan! Pon-chan!” He called into the darkness without response. Even more alarming was the fact that none of his animals appeared even when he dug his long nails into the palms of his hands, drawing blood.
The screen flickered on and he wasn’t too pleased with what he heard although he managed to work his expression into a calm mask. A war and he was expected to help out after being abducted from his shop? Selfish and violent. How typical of humans.
